CASA Season Opener 2016, Florida

CASA/Unifest KO champions Albion Plantation (formerly Plantation FC) and Lauderhill Juniors SC, will kick off the 2016 season for the Caribbean American Soccer Association (CASA), at the Lauderhill Sports Complex, Lauderhill, Fort Lauderdale, today – Wednesday, January 27 – at 7.45 pm.

The two teams will compete with 9 others in the ‘Open’ or Super division, won last year by Lauderhill Lions, their second in a row under head coach Warren Bloise. Among the eleven contenders are five new comers; Academy FC (Coral Springs); Melrose Strikers; Miami United; Steelers FC and Plantation Futballers (sic).

Eight teams including 2 new-comers(Oldtymers FC, Lauderdale FC), will contest the Masters’ division, won last season by Lauderhill Lions Masters.

As part of activities and events marking the official opening of the season, Albion Plantation (AP) and Lauderhill Lions, played to an easy passed 1-1 tie, in the evening’s feature presentation in front of elected and league officials and sponsors, with City Commissioner Ken Thurston doing the official welcome and Richard Mueller, president of the Florida State Soccer Association doing the ceremonial kick-off.

Orchando McKay who is expected to feature prominently in their quest for a three-peat, shot the Lions into the lead, early on the first period, from a left side, half volley that gave the goalkeeper no chance, looping high and away into the back of the next.

Andrew Helm, playing his first season for AP, made his presence felt with the equalizer midway the second half.

The opening match between Lauderhill Juniors and Chivas Futbol Academy of Sarasota, Florida, also ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Keavaun Stevens scored first for the defending champions, midway the first half before Troy Gonzalez scored the equalizer, midway the second period.

Following today’s lone midweek fixture, the Masters’ division will open with a double bill on Saturday, at 4.30 pm. Champions Lauderhill Lions will open their defense against South Florida Kickers and Lakes Veterans taking on Rockers United. Also on Saturday, Melrose Strikers go up against FC Steelers at 6.15 pm, to be followed by Fort Lauderdale Blazers and Island Strikers meeting in the 8.15 nightcap.

The league is presented by CASA in association with the City of Lauderhill and sponsored in part by; Grace Funeral Chapel, Western Union/Grace Foods, Yellow Cab, Douglas Chiropractic and JNBS.
